When that panel is undersized, outdated, or a known fire-risk brand, everything downstream is working harder than it should — and a modern home simply asks more of its electrical service than the homes these older panels were built for.
A panel upgrade (also called a service upgrade) replaces that main panel, and often the meter base and service entrance cable along with it, with equipment rated for today's electrical loads. In most Pierce County homes that means moving from a 60-amp or 100-amp service, or an old fuse box, up to a 200-amp panel. It's one of the highest-value electrical projects a homeowner can do: it makes the house safer, it clears the way for EV charging and heat pumps, and it removes the daily nuisance of tripping breakers.

Homes are electrifying. The appliances that used to burn gas or oil — furnaces, water heaters, ranges, cars — are increasingly electric, and each one is a serious load. A 100-amp panel was sized for a home that didn't run any of those at the same time. Add a Level 2 EV charger (often 40–60 amps on its own) plus a heat pump, and a 100-amp service is out of room before you've turned on the oven.
A 200-amp panel roughly doubles the capacity and, just as importantly, gives you the open breaker slots to actually add new circuits down the road. It's why 200-amp service is the baseline for new construction and the target for nearly every upgrade we do. Upgrading once, to the standard, is far cheaper than upgrading twice.

A panel upgrade is not a project to hand to an unlicensed handyman or to DIY. The work sits between the utility's high-current service and your family, and it has to be inspected to be legal and insurable. In Washington, electrical work like this must be done by a licensed electrician and permitted through L&I. Hiring licensed and permitted protects your home's insurance coverage, protects the resale value (unpermitted panel work is a red flag in inspections), and — most importantly — makes sure the equipment that stands between the street and your bedroom wiring is installed to code.
