A Level 2 home charger is one of the most popular electrical upgrades we do in Pierce County right now — and one of the easiest to get wrong if it's wired by someone who treats it like a regular outlet. Level 1 vs. Level 2 — why Level 2 is worth it

Level 1 is the cord that came in the trunk. It plugs into a standard 120V household outlet and adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour. For a short commute that plugs in every night it can technically keep up, but it's slow — a depleted battery can take more than a full day to recover.

Level 2 runs on 240V, the same kind of circuit as an electric dryer or range, and it charges four to ten times faster. Most EVs go from nearly empty to full overnight. Why a dedicated 240V circuit matters

A Level 2 charger pulls a large, steady load for hours at a time. That has to run on its own dedicated 240V circuit — a home run from your panel to the charger, on a correctly sized breaker and wire, with nothing else sharing it. Undersized wire, a shared circuit, or a reused breaker on a load like this is exactly how you get nuisance trips at best and overheated wiring at worst.   • Universal J1772 / NACS chargers. Brands like ChargePoint, Grizzl-E, Emporia, and Wallbox use the J1772 or NACS connector that works with virtually every non-Tesla EV — and with a Tesla using its included adapter. A universal charger is the flexible choice if you might change cars.
  • Hardwired or plug-in. We'll advise whether a hardwired install or a NEMA 14-50 outlet makes more sense for your charger and location, and wire it to code either way.

Can your panel handle a charger?

This is the question that decides most EV installs. A Level 2 charger typically wants a 40- to 60-amp circuit, and that's a meaningful chunk of a home's total capacity. If you have a modern 200-amp panel with open breaker slots, there's usually plenty of room. If you have an older 100-amp panel, a panel that's already full, or a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, we may need a load calculation, a subpanel, or a panel upgrade before the charger goes in.

Permitting & inspection in Pierce County

Adding a dedicated 240V circuit is permitted electrical work in Washington — not an optional formality. We pull the electrical permit through Washington State Labor & Industries, which issues residential electrical permits for Pierce County, and the finished install is inspected by an L&I electrical inspector. A permitted, inspected install is what keeps your homeowner's insurance intact and protects you if you ever sell. Skipping the permit to save a few dollars is a false economy on a circuit that runs at high load for hours a day.
