Tacoma is an old city, and its electrical work reflects that. Walk through Proctor, the Stadium District, the North End, or the historic homes above Hilltop and you'll find a lot of houses built before 1950 — beautiful Craftsman bungalows and foursquares that were wired for a couple of lamps and a radio, not for two refrigerators, a heat pump, a hot tub, and an electric car. That gap between what these homes were built to carry and what modern life demands is behind most of the calls we take here.
In the oldest of that housing stock we still regularly open walls and find knob-and-tube wiring and, in the mid-century remodels, branch circuits run in aluminum. Both are common reasons a Tacoma home flags on an insurance inspection or a pre-sale, and both are exactly what a whole-house rewire is meant to fix. When the wiring is fine but the service is undersized — a 60- or 100-amp panel, or an old fuse box or Federal Pacific / Zinsco panel that shouldn't still be in service — the fix is a 200-amp panel upgrade. We coordinate the meter work and service upgrade directly with Tacoma Power, the city-owned utility that serves most addresses inside Tacoma, so the reconnect happens cleanly.
At the same time, Tacoma is adopting electric vehicles fast, and a lot of that older housing stock has a garage or driveway but no 240-volt circuit anywhere near it. EV charger installation is one of our most-requested jobs in the city — a Level 2 charger or Tesla Wall Connector on its own dedicated circuit, permitted and inspected. On a home with an older panel, an EV charger and a panel upgrade often make sense to do together, since a full panel won't have room for the new circuit anyway. We'll tell you honestly which one your house actually needs rather than selling you both by default.
And because so much of the wiring here is old, Tacoma generates its share of genuine emergencies — a dead half of the house, a scorched outlet, a breaker that won't reset, or that unmistakable hot-plastic smell behind a wall.
