Why a generator hookup is not a DIY job

The internet is full of "suicide cord" tutorials — a homemade double-male cord that plugs a portable generator straight into a wall outlet or dryer outlet. Don't. Without a transfer switch or interlock, generator power back-feeds through your panel and out into the utility lines, energizing wires that line workers believe are dead. It can kill the crew working to restore your neighborhood's power, and it can destroy your generator the instant the grid comes back. It's also illegal.
